Dairy Extension Programs

Dairy educational programs offered by the Cooperative Extension Service.

Production Testing Programs

Extension works closely with Heart of America Dairy Herd Improvement Association (D H I A) to provide herd management records to dairy producers. Testing programs provide most farms with the best and most economic source of management information. The D H I A herds in the state usually produce more pounds of milk per cow more than non - D H I A herds.

DART Computer Ration Formulation

The DART ration balancing system is used by the state specialist and county Extension agents to formulate least cost diets for dairy herds. Extension also works with feed-industry personnel to assist them in servicing the dairy industry.

Grazing Management Program

A dairy grazing management school was initiated to emphasize the importance of quality forages in feeding the dairy herd. Tours and demonstrations are a vital part of this program.

Field Demonstrations/Applied Research

Field demonstrations are conducted to illustrate (1) improved cow comfort and milk production with examples of fans, sprinklers, and mounds for decreasing heat stress; (2) greater milk production and efficiency with bovine somatotropin; (3) effects of probiotics in feed on production, reproduction, and somatic cell count; and (4) proper use of antibiotics.
