Beef Cattle Nutrition and Feeding
Spreadsheet Decision Aids

Below are spreadsheets available for downloading to assist with nutrition and feeding decisions.

Alfalfa Calculations - The Excel spreadsheet: (1) shows the difference in forage quality aspects of alfalfa at different levels of Relative Feed Value (RFV), calculated TDN for the different examples, and formulas for calculating RFV; (2) allows input of one RFV and price and calculate an adjusted price for a second level of RFV; (3) roughly estimate what TDN might be for a given RFV (this is only a guide and not a substitute for a forage test); and (4) determine if and how much high quality alfalfa could be limit fed to bred heifers and mature cows.

Beef Cow Supplement Examples - This Excel spreadsheet gives example supplements (one or two ingredients) for mature, late gestation and lactating beef cows based on various hay qualities.  The spreadsheet allows the user to compare the cost of different supplements. Supplementation rate is based on a percentage of cow body weight.  A third worksheet allows the user to figure salt limited supplementation.  Supplements should be designed based on a forage test and balance of calcium to phosphorus should be evaluated when high levels of supplementation occur.

Cattle Grower Ration Balancer - This Excel spreadsheet is designed for balancing rations for growing and finishing cattle. A user's guide (PDF) is available for detailed instructions.

Comparative Feed Value Calculator - Use this Excel spreadsheet to compare prices of various feedstuffs based on the value of protein and energy content of soybean meal and corn. A user's guide (PDF) is available for detailed instructions.

Cowculator - Cowculator is an Excel spreadsheet program for balancing rations for mature, gestating and lactating beef cows. The spreadsheet is available through Oklahoma State University. The web page to access and download this program and user's guide is accessible at http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/exten/cowculator.

Medicated Feed Calculator - This Excel spreadsheet calculates the rate of medicated feed based on desired intake rate.  Also calculates minimal and maximal feeding rates based on feeding restrictions.

Mineral Profile Evaluator - This Excel spreadsheet compares the mineral composition of a mineral supplement to the requirements of lactating beef cows and growing calves.
