Plant Diseases
Soybean Diseases in Arkansas
Diseases of soybean are common in Arkansas and can cause serious yield loss
or quality problems. Planting resistant varieties and good cultural practices
are the primary means of control in the state.
Major diseases include charcoal rot, stem canker, sudden death syndrome,
phytophthora root rot, seedling disease complex and frogeye leaf spot. Major
nematodes include soybean cyst nematode and root knot nematode. Another serious
problem in some years, called Green Bean Syndrome, remains a mystery as to cause
although some researchers believe stink bug feeding is one factor.
Because soybean and rice are routinely rotated in Arkansas, aerial blight is
of increasing concern. It is caused by the same fungus that causes sheath blight
of rice.
Minor soybean diseases in the state include bacterial blight, bacterial leaf
spot, brown spot, anthracnose, phomopsis stem and pod blight, target spot, downy
mildew and other problems.
Seed treatment fungicides are commonly used on soybean seed to improve stand
and foliar fungicides are occasionally used for frogeye leaf spot and aerial
blight.
Asian soybean rust, a potentially
devastating disease, was confirmed in Arkansas and nine other southern states in
late November, 2004. For additional information on this topic please visit
