[Title Slide - Soybean Checkoff Funds. Your Arkansas Soybean Podcast, University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture, Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board.]

[Narrator - Video showing a combines and trucks in a soybean field harvesting.] Soybean growers around the U.S. are making a major investment to ensure a high-quality and secure source of food and fuel.  That investment is in the form of a payment made on every bushel of soybeans sold. [Picture of an instructor talking to producers in a soybean field.]

This payment, known as a “check off,” is invested into research to breed a better bean. The funds are divided between the Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board and the national United Soybean Board. [Slide - Arkansas Sobyean Promotion Board and United Soybean Board.]

[Slides showing the outline of the state of Arkansas with county outlines showing soybean production across the state; Instructor talking to producers in a soybean field.] Funds collected in Arkansas are administered by the nine-member Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board. The board uses a significant portion of the money to fuel research by the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture. [Slides showing pictures of diseased soybean plants.] Projects funded in 2010 include disease screening of varieties grown in Arkansas and breeding soybeans with higher yields and improved pest resistance.

[Narrator] Your Arkansas Soybean Podcast is a production of the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture and was funded in part by the Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board. For more information about soybean farming in Arkansas, contact your local county Extension office.
