[Roger Eason, Director of Pine Tree Experiment Station standing next to a combine] These machines are designed to efficiently harvest a crop, but there are things that need to be noticed and maintained. Important things like height of the cutter bar [Slide - Combine Reminders. Height of cutter bar. Picture of a cutter bar.], the adjustment of the reel, especially the speed [Slide - Combine Reminders. Adjust reel speed. Video showing reel bar spinning.], ground speed of the machine [Slide - Combine Reminders. Ground speed. Video showing combine working a a field.]; being careful not to overload the machine because you’re traveling too fast through the field, keeping the cylinder speed adjusted to the right RPM.

And making sure that the rasp bars or spike teeth, whatever the cylinder is equipped with, are maintained and are replaced when they are worn.[Slide - Combine Reminders. Cylinder speed - rasp bar spike teeth. Pictures of rasp bar spike teeth on a combine and separate pieces of rasp bars and spike teeth.] Properly adjusting the screens, so that you don’t lose too much crop out the back, or you don’t place too much trash in with the clean grain. [Roger Eason] And of course the normal maintenance and keeping the machine in good operating order is important too for efficiency of harvest.
